Fractal Morphologies

Fractals, structures divined from a fairly new branch of mathematics, are found quite commonly throughout the cosmos - from bacterial colonies to the void between galaxies - they drive the creation of forms at various scales. How do we extrapolate these morphologies to streamline the way we design human systems? Can we generate architectural or urban morphologies using fractals? This page is an index of fractal morphologies at various scales, along with design concepts where we have employed fractal systems to create master plans and service systems.

Macro-Fractals focuses on geomorphological fractals, and the effects of water and weather systems on the landscape.

Botanical Fractals explores the various scales of fractals that are found in plants and animals.

Space Fractals is a presentation of modern satellite imagery of storms on Jupiter and craters on the moon, analysing how fractals appear in space.

Anthropo-Fractals looks at various scales of man-made fractals, from planning strategies to microchips.

Generative Microhousing is a design proposal submitted to a competition for a housing complex that has been designed using fractal geometries and functions; the service systems within the housing complex are organised and divided into fractally recurring blocks.
